Newborn-Baby Tips

!±8± Newborn-Baby Tips

FOR BABY:

Before you give your baby anything - be sure to personally check/touch/taste it first. Whether it's home-made or Gerber food, drinks, liquid vitamins, etc. I personally had two bad experience because of this mistake. Once, it was the Enfamil Poly-Vi-Sol with Iron Drops that a doctor had recommended. I didn't understand why my baby had turned away from it on the second day, so I decided to taste it. As soon as I did, I almost threw up just from its taste and smell.

It was so bad that it made me sick and I threw the whole vitamin bottle out immediately. That's when it hit me why my baby had made that throw up face the day before. The second time was when I got a Similac Formula Milk that was on sale. Got two of it and had fed my baby for a couple of days. On the third day, my baby refused it. And got so sick, that my baby kept throwing up.

Diaper: Huggie, LUV or Target brand (target brand is great - b/c it's cheap, the stick-on section isn't too sharp so it won't make marks on baby's leg, etc. It also allow air to circulate, thus less diaper rash. Some moms believe that they are all the same - not true.)

Diaper Rash: Desitin Creamy (Diaper Cream) works best, it makes the skin a little whitish but I heard that will go away. Apply this as soon as you see reddish spot appears on baby.

Nipple for bottles (formula feeding): Soft ones that provides a Slow Flow. There's also the playtex drop-in for convenience using disposable Bottle Liners. Always be sure to check the nipple flow and milk temperature for baby's safety.

Pacifier - baby prefers the green Soothies, it's soft Baby.

Gum & Teeth - Clean with warm clean cloth and use soft tooth brush for teeth. Avoid sweet things as they destroy baby's teeth SO FAST!! We might think we are doing it out of love to give them some great tasting syrups, candy desserts etc.. But really keep them off sweet - this will save their baby teeth for a few years and they will enjoy their food w/out pain.

Milk Bumps - Most babies will get this, it's normal (aka baby acne, etc) just keep baby's face and body clean through gentle washing or damp cloth. Been told by doctor not to put any oil on milk bump areas. Lotion and podwer will help keep them dry and soft.

Dandruff - 1-2 months old sometimes get a severe dandruff. I was told by my doctor to wash and apply baby oil. Also, we can buy head & shoulder shampoo or Selsun blue and use only a dime size but be sure to avoid baby's eyes/face. My best friend who already has 3 children w/ the 3rd being only 5mo. right now, suggested washing daily and applying lotion. Shampoo them like the salon.

Baby's Nail - Some say only cut after 40 days - I waited past that to make sure my baby's nail was strong enough close to 2months. DO NOT BITE BABY'S NAIL OFF. Not a good habit, unhealthy as mouth has the most bacteria and I heard some have made the nails bleed.

Belly Button - Apply alcohol on cotton and wipe it frequently, as the nurse use to tell me, wipe every time there's a diaper change. This is important, as I realize now that it helps to dry up the inside part so that the outside can easily fall off in two weeks. As you already know - BATH can be taken after this falls off but NO BATH UNTIL THIS HAPPENS.

Fussiness - Causes are still being studied. Baby are annoyed or fussy usually in the evening. Baby sometime gets fussy during the day though. Breast milk is too slow and they may want frequent feeding. Just be patience and stay with baby or walk him/her around or rock them to sleep. They usually need attention and comfort as well as their milk.

***Moisture area if too red and skin is peeling, use desitin cream.

FOR MOMMY: Stay in Bed or lie down a lot for the first 2 weeks - very crucial as not to tear. Sitting isn't a good idea. Wash w/ warm water and stay dry. Many believe that it's best not to eat this and that, but just avoid seafood and spicy hot stuff so that baby doesn't have any problem. Also, they say drinking red wine and hot water/liquid helps to warm and thin the blood so you heal better. Let or ask you partner, family and friends to help out.

Teething Pacifier

!±8± Teething Pacifier

Actually there is no set pattern when a baby will begin teething, how long it will take, and how painful it will be. For some babies cutting a tooth might happen overnight without pain, while another baby might have to go through a long, drawn out and painful experience.

Usually from three months of age a baby that is teething will gnaw and gum down on anything she or he can get their mouth on. So the counter pressure from biting on the soothie pacifier helps releive the pressure from under the gums.

The teething process will come and go just like any other thing with new babies. Keep trying different pacifiers like a silicone pacifier, latex pacifier, nuk, and maam until you find what provides the best relief for your baby.

Razberry teething pacifier

- Stimulating multi textured can be frozen for extra soothing comfort
- First hands-free all silicone teething pacifier
- Bumpy texture soothes baby's gums
- Cleaner and healthier for your baby
- Non-toxic and 100% medical grade silicone

Most new pacifiers are one-piece, like the a soothie pacifier, whether they are made of silicone or a combination of plastic and latex. It is very important to always check to be sure the nipple is firmly attached to the base of the pacifier. If you are able to detach the nipple with a tug, your baby will do so eventually.

The Soothie Pacifier, today, is number-one pacifier used in over 2,000 hospitals nationwide--over half the hospitals in the coutnry! Over 2.5 million pacifiers are distributed to newborns each year--this means that more than half the babies born go home from the hospital with a Soothie Pacifier.

Besides teething pacifiers there is several things that you can try to help ease pain of teething; some work and some don't, but it is worth a try.

- Teething Rings
- Any Rubber teething toys
- Mom and Dads fingers provide counter pressure and bring relief
- A cold bottle to drink and suck
- cold food like apple sauce, yogurt, and jar food

Infant Tylenol, before you give it ask your doctor to check if it's all right and the amount you need to give.

Some say Orajel works great, also check with your doctor first.

Please Note:

Before trying any of the suggestions listed above or any other type of remedy it is highly recommended that you contact your pediatrician first, allow your doctor to advise you first, before trying anything mentioned on this site.

A very important tip: Keep all your pacifiers sterile to prevent any germs that could harm baby. Thanks for stopping by! We hope that you found the information you wanted. Our hope is that we have a small part in making your baby a happy baby, because all babies should be Happy Babies

Premature Birth - Relieving a Mother's Guilt

!±8± Premature Birth - Relieving a Mother's Guilt

Parents begin the journey of pregnancy with excitement, anxiety, and denial that anything bad could happen to their baby. For parents the experience of having a preterm infant the emotional roller coaster that ensues can be long and toiling. Many mothers first reaction is "what did I do to cause this"?

There are many causes of preterm delivery. Sometimes preterm birth can be caused by the mother's lifestyle choices during the pregnancy such as drugs, alcohol, poor diet, poor prenatal care, smoking, and physical stress. However, most incidences of preterm birth are not caused by the mother's lack of care to herself or her unborn child. This can include a hormone imbalance, an infection, chronic illness, an abnormality of the uterus, or any number of problems. The research though, does indicate a higher percentage of premature births to women over 35, under 19, and carrying multiple fetuses. Statistics show certain regions of the United States have a higher percentage of premature births then other states, for which the cause in unknown. The medical community has struggled to determine exactly what causes preterm birth. With the help and donations to organizations such as the March of Dimes (http://www.marchofdimes.com), the search continues.

Premature infants have different and more critical needs than a full term infant. They lack the body fat to maintain their body temperature. As temperature control is vital to their survival, they will be placed in an incubator to keep them warm. This decreases the chance of infection and limits water loss. Premature infants also have high-energy requirements because of their greater growth rate. Heat loss from the skin raises this energy need. They may have a yellow skin tone and eyes (jaundice) and fewer red blood cells to carry precious oxygen to the tissues (anemia).

They may have feeding problems and irregular breathing (apnea). As their skin is rice paper thin, you can see the blood veins. This is why their sensitivity is manifested and careful control of what lays against their skin must be very soft and comforting. The infant may have to spend weeks or sometimes months in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

With the proper medical support and growth, the infant will normally be able to function on its own. Before being discharged from the NICU the infant must be able to maintain their body temperature in an open crib, take all feedings from a bottle or breast without supplemental tubing, and be steadily gaining weight. Some infants though, will be discharged from the hospital requiring the continued use of a heart monitor and/or oxygen.

According to the March of Dimes Peristats (http://www.marchofdimes.com/peristats/pdflib/195/99.pdf) over 9,596 babies are born preterm every week.

Manufacturers have overlooked the specialized needs of the premature infant. Each time the infant moves or pulls at their tubing and wires the heart monitor may sound an alarm. This requires immediately ensuring the infant is not in trouble or disturbing the infant by undressing the infant to reposition the belt. The number one complaint of parents is the clothing on the market labeled as preemie still must be rolled and tucked and
the necessary wires are draped all over the infant. The manufactured clothing on the market today does not address these needs. In desperation to find small clothing, some parents will resort to Cabbage Patch clothing or doll clothing. These types of clothing should never be put on a preemie. Look inside these clothes - they are made with stiff nylon thread, prickly lace around the cuffs or neckline, the seams are very abrasive, and are made with very course material. The reason infants cry when you put this type of clothing on them is because it is like barbed wire against their delicate skin.

So how do you ensure your infant maintains vital body heat, protect delicate skin, and contain all the lead wires? ANNA'S, LLC (http://www.annaspreemie.com) has manufactured a clothing line that incorporates all of these vital requirements. Their patented sleepers come in six styles to fit your baby's needs. The patented design has a flap in the front of the garment that allows access to the heart monitor so the baby does not have to be undressed (helps to maintain body temperature) and the baby is disturbed less. The flap Velcro's closed so there are no hard snaps to add weight to the garment (protects the delicate skin). Loops on the side of the garment hold all wires together and out of the way of little hands (less pulling of wires reduces the need to reposition them and fewer false alarms). Their specialty bib Velcro's to the garment so there are no dangerous strings to tie around the baby's neck. In addition, each garment is made from 100% Peruvian combed cotton to achieve the highest level of softness possible. They understand that parents have a very difficult time finding or cannot find accessories for the tiniest of babies. Their website is a one-stop shop that carries clothing, diapers for infants up to 6 pounds, the Wee Soothie pacifier that is used in hospitals, and much more.

Buying Soothie Bottles - The Considerations

!±8± Buying Soothie Bottles - The Considerations

Contrary to what you might have heard, deciding to buy Soothie bottles is not as easy as you think. If you have been used to choosing from only a small amount of alternatives, then you should be aware that you are now faced with a lot of options to choose from. In that regard, you should get ready with all the considerations before buying Soothie bottles for your baby.

The truth is that babies totally rely on what you feed them. So, if you want them to remain healthy, then you should always opt for the best. This is where plastic feeding bottles come in. Now, opting to buy bottles can be quite difficult. If you are one of the people who have chosen Soothie bottles, then here are some tips on how you can choose your feeding bottles properly.

Basically, there are three main aspects of Soothie bottles. These are bottle, nipple, and the ring. Although this is the most convenient and inexpensive, most babies are faced with a lot of issues when it comes to these. Most often, you can find nipples with dent. This is the result once negative pressure enters the bottle. Your baby might end up with a restless baby if he is does not have a sucking reflex that is strong enough. Aside from that, your baby will also experience colic pain due to the air that can be passed through by too much sucking. So, make sure that your baby doesn't have any gas problems as this can be a greater issue in the end.

As for gas problems, Soothie bottles have features which have been designed for this. They are made with special ventilation that can keep the gas from being sucked by your baby while they are being fed. Aside from that, you can find them in a safe and different type of plastic. On the other hand, you might find them hard to clean. But, if you think about the benefits it can offer you, it would all be worth it. Your baby will never feel colicky anymore.

The next consideration is the type of plastic the bottle is made up. With Soothie bottles, this aspect is not a problem. Although there are rumors saying that this type of bottle is not BPA free, the United States FDA has approved the standards and quality of the First Year brand. Even as the bottles may contain epoxy resins as well as polycarbonate plastics, the content is so small that it does not pose any harm to the baby.

Cleaning Soothie bottles need quite a lot of effort. We all know that this is made from quality plastic. Therefore, you need to wash them regularly and in the appropriate manner. Aside from that, never leave your baby unattended while feeding. There are a lot of cases where aspiration which leads to suffocation or pneumonia happens if the baby is being propped using a pillow. Feeding your baby is one of the delightful experiences of parenthood. You can prevent it from being a traumatic experience by choosing the improper bottle and feeding them in a wrong way.
